The Study of the United States for Secondary Educators is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center at The University of Montana. There are two Institutes for Teachers and one Institute for Administrators for a total of 60 secondary educators. The overall goal of the Institute is to provide you with a professional development experience in the U.S. that deepens your understanding of U.S. society, education, and culture. The overall theme of the three Institutes is “Liberty, Equality and the American Dream”. Each Institute will host 20 participants and the Institutes will take place as follows:
- University of Montana, Missoula, MT – Institute for Teachers – June 2 through July 7, 2019
- Institute for Training and Development (ITD), Amherst, MA – Institute for Teachers – June 8 through July 13, 2019
- California State University, Chico, CA – Institute for Administrators – June 12 through July 18, 2019
The Institute at ITD will explore the ways in which individual rights and social obligations have evolved through American history. Through lectures, seminars, and integrated site visits, participants will explore different topics such as American culture – past, present, and future; the ideas that shape America; debates in American democracy; and citizen rights. Throughout the Institute, participants will engage in curriculum development projects. Participants will visit Boston and New York City prior to embarking on a study tour to Utah, where they will explore topics such as freedom of religion, land rights, and cultural preservation. The study tour will culminate in Washington, D.C. and participants will return home from one of the airports in the D.C. area. Visits to a parade, a reconstructed nineteenth-century village, and a Native American festival will allow participants to reexamine historical representation and cultural myths.
